May Day occurs on the first of May. It is a 500-year-old tradition when Oxford unites to take part in spring celebrations. It is quite exciting to be up at 4:30am and walking toward High Street where Magdalen College is situated. There I await with many others (approximately 25,000 people) for the 6:00am commencement of the early morning festival.
As the bells ring at Magdalen College Tower, the college choir sing harmonic hymns. It is particularly well known for performing Hymnus Eucharisticus. Finally, prays are delivered and the bells ring loudly to conclude the formal proceedings.
Throughout the streets of Oxford today, you will find various entertainers dancing and performing during the morning. The air is cold but the atmosphere is filled with a happy crowd eager to be involved in the May Day activities.
